The Workshop will be a Shim Sham Special - with a difference!

The Shim Sham is danced in Lindy Hop communities the world over, and it will be great to develop it in our local scene too. It originates from the swing era of the 1920s/30s, originally choreographed by Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant, then famously introduced to the swing scene and adapted by Frankie Manning. We'll be learning his version as is widely danced today, with some original extras from Anna Rogers to give us our own showcase piece that could be brought out at local events. At socials you will find it usually danced in a circle, but this time we will be learning it in lines where you will also learn some invaluable performance techniques which help with posture and confidence.

We'll be using the classic track 'T'aint what you do it's the way that you do it' - to an alternative version by Sy Oliver that is more up-tempo and punchy! Those who feel confident will have the opportunity to showcase it during the social dance for our friends and guests, but there's no pressure to do that and it's just for fun! In order to get through the content in the 2 hours, you'll need to have a knowledge of basic 8-count moves such as the swing-out and lindy turn, and ideally have tried out some Solo Jazz before. If we don't have enough partners or you struggle with 8-count moves, there will also be the option to split the group to give you some basic solo moves to do along side.

Generally this is ideal for dancers in level 2 courses and above, or those who have been social dancing for more than 6 months. Unfortunately it won't be aimed at absolute beginners as there will be an expectation of some basic swing dance knowledge and we'll be moving through content fairly swiftly. If you are unsure whether it is the right level for you, just drop Anna a message!
